Korean & Japanese cuisine has won many hearts and its wonderful ramen bowls are something even I’ve found to love. But, when it’s the end of the month and you crave a soupy bowl of Ramen, it’s a tough spot. Though, desperate times call for desperate measures; I tried a homemade ramen bowl out of our regular Maggi!
The recipe was dubious to start with. Maggi and ramen is no match! Yet, I was hell bent on making this work because it was a nice, cold rainy day. The weather called for a soupy bowl of ramen goodness. The idea just sprang to my mind and I went ahead to funtastic results. Not trying to sell you anything here because nothing on my site is affiliate. (As of 2024. A woman can hope!) But, this has turned out to be a comfort food I crave when the mood hits.
The budget soupy ramen recipe is just a few simple ingredients:
- Maggi noodles – 1 packet
- Water (2x or 3x the quantity of water mentioned on the packaging)
- Maggi Masala/Peri-peri powder/chilli flakes/chilli oil
- Egg – 1
- Vegetables/Chicken (optional)
- Coconut oil – 5-6 tbsp
- Pepper powder
- Salt to taste
Instructions to cook the homemade slurpy ramen
Get the Maggi cooking like you normally do.For those who haven’t made Maggi: Heat water in a pan, add the noodles and seasoning powder. When it gets to boiling, add extra masala to taste. I used peri-peri powder and a little bit of Maggi masala. You can switch it with chilli flakes or chilli oil based on your spice tolerance levels.
I cannot suggest the right measures because everyone’s palate is different. Always taste what you make, if you like it then, voila! Good recipe! If not, stick to simple maggi with salt and pepper.
Okay, back to the recipe. Keep the Maggi on flame, till the noodles are cooked. If the water is not drained/dried up then do not worry, the whole point is to have slurpy ramen. If it is dried up, I am seriously doubting your Maggi cooking skills. Same time, while that is cooking heat a fry pan and add coconut oil. About 5-6 tbsps. Add half a tsp of pepper and salt 1/4 tsp. Once the oil is hot, add an egg to it. If you’re adding veggies or chicken, boil it before hand with some salt before mixing it with the egg. Add more oil, if it dries up.
Once the stir fry is cooked, transfer to your soupy Maggi, simmer for a bit. Mix and enjoy!
Extra tips to change up the poor woman’s ramen recipe
Keep in mind that the flavor of the soupy noodles comes from the coconut oil and egg. If you’re adding different veggies, then adjust the main ingredients accordingly.
If you’re a vegetarian, switch out the egg for mushrooms. The taste may slightly vary but still gives a good flavor.
Adding kimchi, crispy garlic, spring onions and/or pickled radish and onions are garnishing enhances the taste.
If you’re a Shin Ramen fan, simply switch out the Maggi for your favorite. But, that is quite expensive for the broke girl.
Adding chicken stock to the Maggi while cooking also helps with the flavor of the ramen.
Aethetic setting for enjoying your homemade ramen
Put on your comfiest clothes. Toss some pillows on the floor or make a blanket fort on your bed. Cuddle up to a blanket or a soft toy. Then, turn on your favorite show or movie. You can cozy up with a book, too. Now imagine a Studio Ghibli setting and enjoy the soupy ramen. If its raining, your balcony can also become the perfect spot for your main-character vibes!
That’s all folks! See ya next time with something exciting I tried.
